Makes about 2 cups.
Good for
,
Steps
- Rinse the moss well in cold water, pulling off any sand, salt or bits of shell. Rinse two or three times.
- Cover it with fresh cold water and soak 12 to 24 hours. It will swell and turn pale. Change the water once if you can.
- Drain it and rinse it again.
- Put it in the blender with about 1 cup of fresh water. Blend until smooth, adding water a little at a time for a thinner gel.
- Pour it into the jar and refrigerate. It firms up into a gel within a few hours.
Keeping it: Up to 2 weeks in the fridge. Freeze extra in an ice-cube tray and thaw a cube at a time. Throw it out if it smells sour or grows spots.
Be careful: Sea moss is high in iodine, which can upset the thyroid. Keep to 1 to 2 tablespoons a day, and skip it if you have thyroid disease unless your doctor agrees. Buy brands that test for heavy metals.
