Golden milk

A warm turmeric drink from India. The fat in milk and the black pepper help your body take up the turmeric.

Warm in milk10 minutes, makes 1 mug

You need

  • 1 cup milk (dairy, coconut, oat or almond)
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric, or an inch of fresh root, grated
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon and a thin slice of ginger
  • Honey to taste

Makes 1 mug.

Steps

  1. Put everything except the honey in a small pot.
  2. Warm it over low heat, whisking, until it steams. Don't let it boil hard.
  3. Keep it just under a simmer for 5 minutes so the flavours mix.
  4. Strain if you used fresh root, stir in honey once it has cooled a little, and drink it warm.

Keeping it: Best fresh. A spice mix of the dry ingredients keeps for months in a jar.

Be careful: Food amounts of turmeric are safe for most people. If you take blood thinners or have gallstones, ask before making it a daily habit, and know that turmeric pills are far stronger than a mug of golden milk.
