Açaí

Euterpe oleracea

Fruits. Latin American & Amazon and Modern nutrition.

Also called Acai berry, Assai berry, Açaí palm fruit

Spanish: Açaí

Açaí is a dark purple palm berry from the Brazilian Amazon, mostly sold as juice, frozen pulp or powder for its antioxidant content.

Did you know? Most of an açaí berry is one large seed, and only a thin layer of purple pulp surrounds it.

What it may help, and how strong the proof is

  • Heart health. Anthocyanins (purple plant pigments) may help blood vessels in lab and animal studies. Human trials are few, small and short.
    Traditional proof
  • Inflammation. Lab tests show açaí compounds can calm inflammation signals in cells. There is no solid human proof.
    Traditional proof
  • Weight. Ads often claim açaí melts fat. No good human trial shows weight loss from açaí, and US regulators have taken action against false açaí weight-loss ads.

Where to get it

Grows on açaí palms in the Amazon floodplains of Brazil, Peru and Colombia. Sold as frozen pulp, juice, powder and capsules. Key nutrients: fiber, healthy fats (mostly oleic acid) and anthocyanins.

Be careful

Most people tolerate açaí as food. Bowls and sweetened juices can carry a lot of added sugar, and product quality varies widely between brands.

Mixing with other things

  • Works well together

Usually blended with banana in smoothie bowls for sweetness and body.

  • Works well together

Both are Amazon fruits sold as juices and powders.

The honest take

Açaí is a tasty berry with real fiber and healthy fats, but the superfood label goes far beyond the evidence. Its high antioxidant score comes from lab tests, which do not show what happens in the body. No good human trial shows it burns fat or beats other berries.
